Ash Grove was the first of three new bus garages constructed by London Buses and opened in 1981 to alow other older garages to be closed, costing in the region of £3.5million. Upon opening the garage had covered space for 140 vehicles, with further yard space for another 30. With the privatisation of London Buses in April 1989, Ash Grove was placed under the London Forest business unit. This lasted until 1991 when London Forest was wound up after losing 11 routes and Ash Grove was closed.
Ash Grove was re-opened in 1994 as Cambridge Heath by Kentish Bus, who had won a small number of routes in the Leyton area. Following further tender losses, Kentish Bus vacated the garage in February 1998 and it was again closed.
Following the collapse of Harris Bus in December 1999, London Regional Transport subsidiary East Thames Buses assumed the running of the Harris routes, with Ash Grove being re-opened again as an operating base in January 2000. East Thames buses relocated to Mandela Way, Southwark on 13 October 2005 although CT Plus began to operate from the garage shortly after, saving it from again closing.
Following the conversion of Route 38 from AEC Routemaster operation to that of the Mercedes Benz Citaro articulated buses in November 2005, Arriva London began to use Ash Grove as a base for these vehicles, as Clapton Garage was unsuitable. Following the conversion of the route back to standard double decker operation, the decision was taken to stay at the garage, with further routes being allocated here.
