Following the decision to extend the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Airport, London Underground also took the decision to replace the life expired 1938, 1959 and 1962 stock units that were operating services on the line.
The 1973 Stock was constructed by Metro-Cammell at their Birmingham plant between 1972 and 1975, with the first unit being entered into service on 19 July 1975 and the last in 1977. The new trains were constructed with longer cars, wider passenger door openings and large luggage areas for airport travellers.
Between 1996 and 2001, the entire 1973 stock fleet was sent to Bombardier Transportation in Wakefield for refurbishment, with the entire interior being completely remodelled icluding new flooring, grab rails, lighting and increased luggage space.
