Notes

Beckenham was constructed and opened in 1985.

The station was built to replace the former Kent Fire Brigade station on Bromley Road built in 1905. The former station was constructed by Beckenham Municipal Borough before passing to Kent Fire Brigade in 1948.

Following the formation of the Greater London Council and the subsequent redrawing of boundaries, the station passed to London Fire Brigade ownership in 1965.

The early 1980s saw the former station become life expired and closed on the same day the new station became operational before finally being demolished in mid 2018.

London Fire Brigade Biggin Hill Fire Station was constructed and opened in 1939 by the Kent Fire Brigade.

The station was built to replace the existing Kent Fire Brigade station on Main Road that had become life expired.

With the formation of the Greater London Council and the redrawing of boundaries, the station passed to the ownership of the London Fire Brigade in 1965.

Due to safety concerns about the narrow appliance bays at the station, permission was granted in 2020 to build a new appliance bay to the side of the current station, with works being completed in late 2023.

London Fire Brigade Orpington Fire Station was originally constructed and opened by the Kent Fire Brigade in 1958.

The station was built to replace the previous Kent Fire Brigade station located on High Street and dating from 1938 which had become unfit for the needs of the Brigade. This station building survives today as a retail premises.

With the formation of the Greater London Council and the redrawing of boundaries, ownership of the station passed to the London Fire Brigade in 1965.

Following the signing of a private finance initiative in 2008, an agreement was reached to rebuild Orpington to provide a station more suited to modern operational needs.

Demolition of the station commenced in 2014 with a temporary building being erected in the yard to allow the station to remain operational with one appliance, while the second appliance was temporarily located at Beckenham Fire Station.

Construction of the new station was completed, and the station opened for operation in June 2015.

Notes

Sidcup Fire Station was constructed on this site by the Foots Cray Urban District and opened in 1914.

The station was built on the site of the previous 1902 station which was poorly constructed and had to be demolished.

Ownership passed to Sidcup Urban District in 1921, before passing again when Chislehurst and Sidcup UDC was formed in 1934. This new ownership extended the rear of the station premises to provide more facilities in that year.

World War II saw the station pass to the National Fire Service in 1939 and this lasted until 1948, when the NFS was disbanded and the station passed to Kent Fire Brigade.

With the creation of the Greater London Council and the redrawing of boundaries, the station passed to ownership of the London Fire Brigade in 1965.

In 2009, the station underwent an expansion and refurbishment to allow larger fire engines to be stationed here. The resulting new appliance bay was constructed at the rear of the existing building.

The station was constructed in 1904 by the Municipal Borough of Bromley and opened in 1906.

The new station was built to replace the existing fire station located in nearby West Street which was deemed too small for the needs of the fire brigade. The station building survives today as a restaurant.

With the outbreak of World War II the current station was commandeered by the National Fire Service and remained under this control until 1948.

Cessation of the war saw the NFS disbanded and ownership of the fire station was passed to the Kent Fire Brigade.

Following the formation of the Greater London Council and the redrawing of boundaries, Bromley Fire Station passed from the Kent Fire Brigade to the London Fire Brigade in 1965.

Notes

New Cross was constructed by the London County Council in 1891 and was opened in June 1894 by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

With the outbreak of World War II, the Auxiliary Fire Service assumed control of New Cross in 1939, and it was here that one of London’s first black firefighters, George Arthur Roberts BEM was stationed.

Following the cessation of hostilities, the station returned to the control of the London Fire Brigade in 1948.

News Cross today stands as London’s oldest operational fire station and was saved from closure by the Mayor of London in 2013.

The station was built to replace the existing 1925 fire station here that had become unfit for purpose and was demolished in 1989 to make way for the current building.

The history of fire stations in the area is also evident on the adjacent site of Peckham Fire Station, as the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Camberwell Fire Station built in 1867 is located here.

This station was closed on the day the new station opened and was granted Grade II Listed Building status on 17th November 2008. Today, the premises are still in use by the South London Gallery.

The station, one of the last to be built by the MFB before it was renamed to the London Fire Brigade, was required to replace the existing station on the site, which was built in 1872 and had become unfit for purpose.

The current station was granted Grade II Listed Building status on 29th October 2009 for its special architectural interest.

London Fire Brigade Old Kent Road Fire Station was constructed and opened in 1971.

The station was built to replace the existing Metropolitan Fire Brigade Fire Station located further along the road that had opened in 1903, closing the same day the new station became operational.

The former MFB station was granted Grade II Listed Building status on 26th April 1989 and is still used today by an antiques & fireplace retailer.

Following a successful £52 million bid to the Department for Communities and Local Government for PFI funds in 2006, the London Fire Brigade announced Old Kent Road as one of ten fire stations in the Capital to be rebuilt.

This station was closed and demolished in 2014, with the current station opening in March 2015.

Following the dissolution of the NFS, London Fire Brigade once again took ownership of the station.
