Station History

Leslie Green designed Highgate Station was opened as one of their northern termini by the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway on 22nd June 1907.

The station was upgraded in 1930 with the original lifts being replaced with escalators. Also at this time, the secondary entrance to the station was replaced with a Charles Holden design virtually identical to the one at Hammersmith.

Upon the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board, the CCE&HR became part of the London Underground, forming the Northern Line in 1933.

Under the new ownership the station was renamed Archway (Highgate) to better reflect its location on 11th June 1939, before the line was extended to East Finchley as part of the New Works Programme on the 3rd July of that year.

Two years later, the station was again renamed, this time to Highgate (Archway) on 19th January 1941 before reverting to Archway in December 1947.

Redevelopment of the area in the early 1960s saw the original station buildings at Archway demolished and replaced as part of the 17 storey Archway Tower office scheme in 1963.

Plans to make the station step free were implemented in 2007 but, although a Transport and Works Act order was granted, the project was subsequently shelved due to lack of funds.
