Garage History

Wood Green Bus Garage was constructed as a tram depot on the site in 1856. However, it was not until 1885 that the depot came into use, utilising steam trams operated by the North London Tramways Company.

Following the collapse of the North London Tramways Company in 1890, the North Metropolitan Electric Tramways Company purchased the depot and tracks of the NLTC from the official receiver. The North Metropolitan ceased using steam trams and operated a fleet of horse-drawn vehicles instead.

1902 saw the depot and its lines purchased by Metropolitan Electric Tramways Limited. A new electrified line was added from Wood Green to Finsbury Park beginning operation on 22 July 1904 with the existing depot being demolished and rebuilt for electric operation.

The existing line from Wood Green to Ponders End previously operated by the North Metropolitan was electrified in 1905, ending the period of horse tram operation at the depot.

Operational requirements saw the depot expanded to house additional vehicles in 1908, with capacity increased from 62 to 87. Further remodelling and capacity increases were made in 1912.

Following the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board on 1 July 1933, Metropolitan Electric Tramways Limited became part of the new body, and the decision was taken to cease tramway operations at Wood Green.

The tram depot closed in early 1937, with the tram fleet moved to other depots in the area. This allowed for Wood Green to be comprehensively remodelled and partially rebuilt to accommodate a fleet of 108 trolleybuses. The new depot opened, with the first trolleybuses commencing operation in May 1938.

Early 1960 saw the beginning of another garage transformation towards the conversion to motor bus operation and the withdrawal of the trolleybuses. Partial re-allocation was finally achieved in April 1961, with the remainder following suit in November of that year.

The privatisation process of London Buses began in April 1989 and Tottenham was allocated to the Leaside Buses business unit, operating under this name until privatisation in January 1995 when the business unit was sold to Cowie Group, who rebranded as Arriva in April 1998. At this time, Wood Green became the headquarters of Arriva London North.

Garage History

Tottenham Bus Garage was constructed by the Metropolitan Electric Tramway company allowing them to augment their tram operations, opening on 17 July 1913.

Late 1913 saw the bus operations of the MET acquired by the London General Omnibus Company, with The garage also passing ownership.

The outbreak of World War I saw the garage requisitioned by AEC as part of the war effort in 1914, not returning to bus operations until June 1919.

Following the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933, the London General Omnibus Company was absorbed into London Transport.

As part of the ever-changing needs of bus operation, Tottenham garage was extensively modernised between the end of 1985 and mid-1986, losing its distinctive triangular gable roof in the process.

The privatisation process of London Buses began in April 1989 and Tottenham was allocated to the Leaside Buses business unit, operating under this name until privatisation in January 1995 when the business unit was sold to Cowie Group, who rebranded as Arriva in April 1998.

Following several route gains by Arriva, the garage was extended to increase capacity in mid-1999 and celebrated its Centenary in 2013.

Garage History

Thornton Heath Bus Garage began its operational life as a depot for Croydon and Thornton Heath Tramway Company in 1879 to house their fleet of horse trams.

The depot was demolished and reconstructed in connection with the conversion to electric traction in 1901.

The reconstruction of the depot was planned to house 26 trams, however, this proved to be insufficient and an extension to upgrade capacity to 43 cars was constructed and opened in 1902.

As part of the 1950 tram replacement program, The depot was earmarked for closure and reconstruction as a bus garage. The closure occurred in 1949 with the existing trams and staff relocated to Purley depot.

Following demolition, the new bus garage was constructed and was opened in 1951 housing just 54 AEC Regent III vehicles, roughly 50% of its total capacity.

With the break up of London Buses in preparation for privatisation, The garage and its routes were allocated to the South London business unit on 1 April 1989, trading as South London Transport Limited. Upon privatisation, the business passed to Cowie Group in January 1995 before being rebranded to Arriva in November 1997.

Garage History

Construction of Stamford Hill Bus Garage was commenced by the London County Council to house a number of its fleet of electric trams in late 1905, with the depot opening to traffic in February 1907.

Following the acquisition of the LCC Tramway system by the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933, Stamford Hill was extensively rebuilt to allow the housing and operation of trolleybuses, re-opening in 1936 with services commencing in February 1939.

Further reconstruction and development occurred at Stamford Hill in late 1960, with the withdrawal of trolleybuses in London. Stamford Hill was converted for motor bus use and re-opened in July 1961.

The privatisation process of London Buses began in April 1989 and Stamford Hill was allocated to the Leaside Buses business unit, operating under this name until privatisation in January 1995 when the business unit was sold to Cowie Group.

Following a loss of contracted routes, alongside the reorganisation of the Cowie Group business, Stamford Hill Garage was closed on 13 May 1995, with all existing routes transferring to other garages.

The site was mothballed in March 2000 and lay dormant until Arriva London (Cowie Group rebranded in 1998) closed Clapton Garage and reopened Stamford Hill in April 2006.

With the loss of several North London routes, Stamford Hill was closed in December 2020, with its routes relocated to neighbouring garages. However, following the decision to vacate Ash Grove garage, Route 254 moved here and the garage re-opened on 24th February 2024.

Garage History

Operation of Enfield Bus Garage was commenced by the London General Omnibus Company in 1927.

Within 6 months of opening, further land was purchased at the front of the garage for use as a bus stand, which was used in later life as a trolleybus terminus.

The early 1980s saw the garage undergo modernisation costing over £6 million, with the garage re-opening in 1984 and able to house 106 vehicles.

Enfield Garage was allocated to the Leaside business unit on 1 April 1989 in the run-up to the privatisation of London Buses.

Privatisation of the London Bus Network in January 1995 saw the sale of Leaside Buses, including its garages to Cowie Group, who rebranded to Arriva London in April 1998.

In recent times, Enfield has become a central part of Arriva London operations with the opening of the Accident Repair Centre, which also undertakes major refurbishments of the company’s fleet.

Garage History

Although now Palmers Green Bus Garage, the building was initially opened in October 1910 as an indoor roller skating rink called ‘Rosalies’.  

The purpose of the rink was to attract wealthy individuals to the area, hoping they would purchase new properties that were being constructed at the time. However, in 1912, the craze for roller skating died off and the owners were forced into bankruptcy.  

At around the same time, the London General Omnibus Company was preparing to extend their number 29 service to Southgate and to develop new services, which required garaging facilities in the area so they purchased the site and converted the existing buildings.

The building has seen constant use as a bus garage ever since, being modernised in 1952 and again in 1974.  Several operators have used the site over its life and, since 1998, it has been under the ownership of Arriva London.

A further addition to the site occurred in 2017 when 2 adjacent buildings were demolished to provide hard standing to the side of the existing garage.

Garage History

The London General Omnibus Company opened Norwood Bus Garage in 1909. The original garage structures survived untouched until 1981 when the original garage was closed and the entire site demolished.

During this time, the garage allocation was moved to Clapham Garage and did not return until the newly constructed Norwood was opened in 1984.

In the run-up to privatisation of London Buses, Norwood Garage was allocated to the South London business unit on 1 April 1989.

Privatisation of the London Bus Network in January 1995 saw the sale of South London, along with its garages to Cowie Group, who rebranded to Arriva London in April 1998.

Garage History

The first Edmonton Bus Garage at this location was established in 1993 by London Suburban Buses to accommodate their new routes 4 and 271, and later Route 41 was added to their portfolio.

In 1995, MTL London Northern acquired London Suburban and relocated routes 4 and 271 to Holloway. The following year saw Cowie Leaside take over Route 41, and the garage was closed.

1996 saw County Bus & Coach acquired by Cowie Group, who re-opened the garage in early 1997 and merged County Bus with the Leaside Travel unit.

In the later part of the year, Cowie Group underwent a rebranding and became known as Arriva. As a result of this rebranding, the County Bus operation was integrated into Arriva East Herts & Essex, and the operations were relocated to Ware. At this time, the Edmonton garage was shut down.

Following the introduction of Mercedes Benz Citaro G Articulated vehicles by Arriva on Route 149, Edmonton was adapted and re-opened in 2005.

This operation lasted until September 2012 when articulated operation ceased and the garage was closed again.

The closure however only lasted for 2 years as the nearby Lea Valley garage was closed and all operations transferred to Edmonton.

Garage History

Croydon Bus Garage was constructed and opened by the London General Omnibus Company in 1915 and, following a partnership agreement, was operated from the outset by Thomas Tilling (hence the garage code TC for Tilling Croydon).

During the early 1930s, the decision was taken to use the garage to house roofed double-deck vehicles and, as the garage was not high enough to achieve this, reconstruction works were carried out on the roof at the time.

The onset of World War II in 1939 led to German air raids and overnight on May 10, Thornton Heath, Upper Norwood, Addiscombe, and parts of South Croydon were heavily bombed.

During the raid in South Croydon, two high explosive bombs fell on the bus garage, igniting the fuel tanks of the 56 buses parked there, killing 7 people and destroying both the garage building itself. Following the end of the war, the garage was reconstructed and reopened in 1954.

On 1 April 1989, London Buses was divided into 11 separate business units, with South London Transport taking ownership of Croydon.

In January 1995, the Cowie Group purchased South London from its management as part of the privatisation of London bus services. This was followed by the rebranding of Cowie Group to Arriva in November 1997.

Garage History

The origins of Clapton Bus Garage can be traced back to 1882 when the North Metropolitan Tramway Company opened their horse tram depot, referred to as Hackney Tram Depot on the site.

In 1896, the London County Council Tramways network began to expand heavily across the Capital and purchased North Metropolitan.

However, the LCC did not begin to operate its services from the depot until 1906, after the site had been converted for electric tram operation.

The LCC operation lasted until 1933, being taken over by the London Passenger Transport Board and the last trams operated from the depot in 1939.

At this time, following the demolition of some of the surrounding buildings to create more space and better access arrangements, the depot was converted by the LPTB for trolleybus operation.

In 1950, the garage changed its name to Clapton to avoid confusion with the nearby bus garage in Well Street and works were commenced to convert the garage to motorbus operation.

The conversion was completed, and the first 67 motorbuses were allocated in 1959 as part of the trolleybus replacement programme, with the last trolleybuses running in 1962.

Following a downturn in the number of routes allocated to the garage, it was closed in 1987 with the vehicle allocation moving to the nearby Ash Grove garage.

However, the garage was re-opened in 1989 to take the pressure off of other garages in the area. The garage allocation increased again in 1991 with the closure of Ash Grove and again in 1995 with the closure of Stamford Hill.
