Station History

Baker Street Station was constructed as part of the World’s first Underground railway between Paddington and Farringdon by the Metropolitan Railway in 1860, opening three years later on 10th January 1863.

Five years later, the Metropolitan & St John’s Wood Railway opened a line constructed in tunnels from Baker Street to Swiss Cottage, with the Metropolitan Railway providing all services.

Following extensions in the late 1870s and early 1880s the M&SJWR duplicated their existing tunnel from the station before being absorbed into the Metropolitan Railway.

November 1891 saw the presentation of a bill to Parliament for the construction of the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway. The new line would run from Marylebone to Elephant and Castle and the bill was approved in 1900.

Construction commenced in August 1900 and the line saw its first trains in 1905, albeit only for test purposes, with the official opening between Waterloo and Lambeth North occurring on 10th March 1906.

Baker Street served as the temporary terminus for this line until 27th March 1907, when the rest of the line to Marylebone was opened.

In 1914, the Leslie Green-designed BS&WR station building was supplemented by a new concourse constructed under the Metropolitan Railway, allowing direct connections via escalators instead of the original lifts supplied at opening.

With the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933, the Metropolitan Railway and Baker Streeet & Waterloo Railway were amalgamated with other Underground Railway companies to form London Underground, with the lines becoming the Metropolitan and Bakerloo respectively.

Due to a bottleneck at Finchley Road created by the reduction of four tracks to two, the LPTB decided to extend the Bakerloo Line north from Baker Street as a branch line, taking over the existing Metropolitan Line stopping service from Finchley Road to Stanmore. Construction began in April 1936 and a new ticket hall adjacent to the existing facility was provided at the station before the new branch commenced service on 20th November 1939.

In the late 1960s, a proposal was made for the Bakerloo line branch to Stanmore to be included in a new line extending from Baker Street via Bond Street, Trafalgar Square and Cannon Street before heading to South London. The new ‘Fleet Line’ was approved as far as a new terminus at Charing Cross and construction commenced in early 1970.

A new northbound platform was constructed as part of the line at Baker Street and the now Jubilee Line opened along its entirety on 1st May 1979.

The station building, its sub-surface platforms and front retaining wall were granted Grade II Listed Status on 26th March 1987.

Station History

Although the London and North Western Railway had constructed their main line from London Euston through the area in 1851 a station was not provided here. The station, originally named Louden Road, opened in 1879 in response to local demand.

The construction of their ‘New Line’ by the LNWR in 1912 saw a further two platforms constructed at the station for the new services.

Following the passing into law of the Railways Act 1921, the London & North Western was amalgamated with other companies to become part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Under this new entity, the station was renamed South Hampstead in 1922.

This was followed by the passing of the Transport Act 1947 that saw the ‘Big Four’ railway companies of the time Nationalised to become British Railways. The line and its services were taken up by the Midland Region on 1st January 1948.

Electrification of the West Coast Main Line in the early 1960s saw the platforms on the ‘fast’ lines demolished to allow the tracks to be realigned, leaving the station layout as it is today. As part of the work, the original LNWR station building was also demolished and replaced with the current structure.

Management changes saw the station pass to the London & Southeastern business unit upon sectorisation in 1982, relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

Privatisation of the railways saw the station and line become part of National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary in 1993.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London began operation of the services under their London Overground brand.

Station History

The London & North Western Railway built the first Willesden Junction station on 1st September 1866, replacing the London & Birmingham Railway station located half a mile to the Northwest on the West Coast Main Line.

Just three years later, the North London Railway constructed and opened their new lines through the area, passing over the WCML and a station was provided with two sets of separate platforms for Richmond and Shepherds Bush services.

This iteration of the high-level station lasted until 1894 when it was rebuilt to combine the existing services running through it. The new station consisted of two platforms for Richmond/Shepherds Bush services and an additional, shorter platform for trains to Earls Court. A new station building was constructed at this time and still survives today.

Following the decision of the London & North Western Railway to build a new line from London Euston to Watford, construction began in 1910 and two new outer platforms, along with two bay platforms were provided alongside the existing facilities on the West Coast Main Line. The new ‘low-level’ station opened along with the rest of the line on 15th June 1912.

Services through the low-level station increased with the arrival of London Underground Bakerloo Line services to Watford on 1st August 1917.

The Railways Act 1921 saw the grouping of railway companies and the London & North Western was amalgamated with several other companies to become the London Midland and Scottish Railway on 1st January 1923. This was followed by Nationalisation in 1948 when the LMS became part of British Railways Midland Region.

After World War II, Willesden Junction was left in a very dilapidated state. As a result of this, along with the withdrawal of Earls Court services, the high-level station was rebuilt in an island configuration, opening in 1956.

Electrification of the West Coast Main Line and the need to realign its tracks saw the main line platforms at Willesden closed on 3rd December 1962 and subsequently demolished.

Due to falling patronage, London Underground withdrew the Bakerloo Line service between here and Watford Junction on 24th September 1982. However, this decision was reversed and services resumed as far as Harrow and Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Management changes saw the station pass to the London & Southeastern business unit upon sectorisation in 1982, relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

Privatisation of the railways saw the station and line become part of National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary in 1993.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.

However, due to the sparse local population of the area, no station was initially provided at South Kenton.

It wasn’t until the 3rd of July 1933 that a station was finally built, designed by the architect William Henry Hamlyn and opened by the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway.

The new station consisted of a single island platform accessed from both sides of the line by a footbridge. At the time, it was seen as more than adequate for the small local population. However, with the growth of nearby residential areas, the station soon became an important hub for commuters.

In 1948, the nationalisation of the railways saw the ownership of South Kenton Station transfer to British Railways (Midland Region). The station continued to serve the local community, but changes were made in 1964 to improve accessibility. The cumbersome and steep footbridge was removed, and a concrete underpass was built, making it easier for passengers to reach the platforms.

London Underground cut Bakerloo Line services back from Watford Junction to Stonebridge Park on 24th September 1982, however, the service was reinstated to terminate at Harrow & Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Following sectorisation of the railways in 1982, the line and station came under the London and Southeast Business Unit, later rebranded to Network Southeast in 1986.

A further and so far final change of management occurred upon privatisation in 1997 when National Express, under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary, assumed control. This lasted for just under ten years when, in November 2007, Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.

Kenton was constructed and opened by the London and North Western Railway on their ‘New Line’ from London Euston to Watford Junction in June 1912. Although the ‘New Line’ ran alongside the existing main line, no platforms have ever been provided to serve these lines.

Services through the station were enhanced by the arrival of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line on 16th April 1917 after the line was extended from Stonebridge Park to Watford Junction.

Following the passing of the Railways Act 1921, Grouping of the railways saw the LNWR absorbed with other companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the new entity assuming control of all LNWR stations and services.

The Transport Act 1947 saw the ‘Big Four’ railway companies become Nationalised, with the LMS becoming part of British Railways (Midland Region) on 1st January 1948.

Nothing of any note occurred to the station in the following decades until, on 24th September 1982, London Underground withdrew the Bakerloo Line services between Stonebridge Park and Watford Junction, leaving the station to only be served by British Rail London Euston to Watford services. However, this situation only lasted for just under 2 years as the Bakerloo Line service was reinstated as far as Harrow & Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Sectorisation of the railways in 1982 saw the existing regions consigned to history and replaced by new ‘business units’ that would assume responsibility for the running of services and management of stations. The Watford services were placed under the London & Southeastern business unit, being relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

The next change of management was enacted in 1997 when, following the passing of the Railways Act 1993, the business units were sold off to private companies. The Watford DC Line services were assumed by National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.
