Station History

Kenton was constructed and opened by the London and North Western Railway on their ‘New Line’ from London Euston to Watford Junction in June 1912. Although the ‘New Line’ ran alongside the existing main line, no platforms have ever been provided to serve these lines.

Services through the station were enhanced by the arrival of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line on 16th April 1917 after the line was extended from Stonebridge Park to Watford Junction.

Following the passing of the Railways Act 1921, Grouping of the railways saw the LNWR absorbed with other companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the new entity assuming control of all LNWR stations and services.

The Transport Act 1947 saw the ‘Big Four’ railway companies become Nationalised, with the LMS becoming part of British Railways (Midland Region) on 1st January 1948.

Nothing of any note occurred to the station in the following decades until, on 24th September 1982, London Underground withdrew the Bakerloo Line services between Stonebridge Park and Watford Junction, leaving the station to only be served by British Rail London Euston to Watford services. However, this situation only lasted for just under 2 years as the Bakerloo Line service was reinstated as far as Harrow & Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Sectorisation of the railways in 1982 saw the existing regions consigned to history and replaced by new ‘business units’ that would assume responsibility for the running of services and management of stations. The Watford services were placed under the London & Southeastern business unit, being relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

The next change of management was enacted in 1997 when, following the passing of the Railways Act 1993, the business units were sold off to private companies. The Watford DC Line services were assumed by National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.
