Station History

Pinner station was opened by the London & Birmingham Railway on their route from Euston in 1842. However, just four years later in 1846, the L&BR was taken over by the London & Northwestern Railway.

To better reflect the area that the station served, it was renamed to Pinner & Hatch End on 1st January 1897. The LN&WR soon discovered that the station was not fit for its purposes and commissioned architect Gerald Horsley to design new buildings in the early 1900s, with the new station being opened in 1911.

Services through the station were improved in 1917 with the arrival of London Underground’s Bakerloo line on 16th April after they extended their line from Willesden Junction to Watford. Three years later, the station received a further name change, becoming Hatch End (for Pinner) on 1st February 1920.

With the passing of the Railways Act 1921, the London & North Western Railway was amalgamated with other companies to become the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway in 1923. This was followed by Nationalisation in 1952 when the LMS became part of British Railways Midland Region.

Under British Railways management the station name was changed for the final time to Hatch End on 11 June 1956. This was followed by the decision to remove the island platforms on the fast and semi-fast lines in 1963, leaving the station to only be served by London Underground and local Watford services.

Fast forward to the early 1980s when access to the remaining platforms was reconstructed. At this time, a fence was also constructed at the rear of the Southbound platform to protect passengers from passing fast services.

London Underground decided to remove Bakerloo Line services between Watford and Queens Park in 1982, and this year also saw the sectorisation of British Railways, with the London & South Eastern business unit taking over management, before rebranding as Network Southeast on 10th June 1986.

Privatisation of the railways followed in March 1997 with the station passing to National Express under their Silverlink Metro brand, before in November 2007 the final change of ownership occurred with Transport for London assuming control under their London Overground service.

However, due to the First World War, and a lack of patronage, the station closed on 1 January 1917.

Two years later on 5th May 1919, the station reopened, but was only served at the time by London Underground’s Bakerloo Line. To better serve the local area, and also due to land constraints, a new station was constructed 210 metres (230 yards) south of the existing one, opening on 17 November 1952 with the original station closing on the same day.

On the 24th September 1982, London Underground’s Bakerloo Line services were cut back to Stonebridge Park, leaving the station to only be served by Local Watford services.

The local population improved over the following years and a station, including the current station building was constructed and opened as ‘Bushey & Oxhey’ in 1841 serving the L&BR mainline.

Just five years later, the L&BR was taken over by the London and Northwestern Railway, and it was this new company that, wanting to compete with the local bus and tram companies, decided to construct a new line from London Euston to Watford Junction via Watford High Street.

With the outbreak of World War II, due to emergency regulations requiring the removal of station names from platforms, the station was known for the duration of the war as ‘Ampersand’ as only the words Bushey and Oxhey were painted over on the name boards.

Three years after the cessation of hostilities, railways in Great Britain were nationalised, and the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway became part of British Railways Midland Region.
Station History

Watford High Street Station was opened on 1 October 1862 by the Watford & Rickmansworth Railway on their route from Watford Junction to Rickmansworth Church Street.

Services through the station were expanded on 15 June 1912 when the London and Northwestern Railway opened its new branch line from Watford Junction to Croxley Green. This was followed by the arrival of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line in 1917 following its extension north from Queens Park and in 1922 by the completion of the suburban line from Watford Junction to Camden by the LNWR.

Following the Railways Act 1921, the LNWR was absorbed into the London, Midland & Scottish Railway in 1923. Nationalisation in 1948 saw the LMS become part of British Railways Midland Region and the station passed ownership again at this time.

Within four years of the new regime coming into existence, services on the Rickmansworth line, which had been massively underused for years, were ceased in 1952 and although freight services continued to run, the branch was officially closed in 1967.

Further contraction of services through the station occurred on 24th September 1982 when London Underground cut the Bakerloo Line back to Stonebridge Park. With sectorisation of British Rail in 1982, the London & Southeastern business unit assumed control, being relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

Under the new brand, Broad Street Station was closed and the trains from the station via Primrose Hill were diverted to Liverpool Street. This lasted until 1992 when the Primrose Hill services were withdrawn, followed on 22 March 1996 by services to Croxley Green, leaving only the London Euston trains to serve the station.

Privatisation occurred on the National Rail Network in March 1997 and the line and its services were taken over by National Express, under their Silverlink Metro brand. This lasted for just over a decade until, on 10 November 2007, Transport for London assumed ownership under the London Overground banner.

Station History

Although a station opened by the London & Birmingham Railway has existed in the area since 1836, the station was relocated to the current site, accommodating the St Albans Abbey Line on 5 May 1858.` However, it was not until 1862 that the embryonic stages of the Watford DC Lines arrived when the Watford & Rickmansworth Railway commenced operation on their route from the station.

Following the takeover of the L&BR by the London and Northwestern Railway in 1846, the new company, to compete with local buses and trams, decided to build a new suburban line from Watford Junction Station to London Euston via Watford High Street, rejoining the main alignment at Bushey. The new line was constructed and was opened in 1912 with this being followed by the extension of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line to Watford Junction, providing a joint service, in April 1917.

Grouping of the railways was enacted under the Railways Act 1921, and the new London, Midland, and Scottish Railway assumed ownership of the station and its services on 1 January 1923. This was followed by Nationalisation in 1948 with the assumption of services by the London Midland Region of British Railways.

Operations continued unchanged over the following decades until, in September 1982, the Bakerloo Line services were withdrawn between Watford and Harrow & Wealdstone stations, leaving only British Rail serving the line. 1984 saw major changes at the station when the original Victorian buildings were demolished and replaced by the current office block building.

1982 also saw the sectorisation of the railways and three passenger operations were created. The Network Southeast operation assumed management of the Watford DC Lines service and began running train services on the line in 1986.

Network Southeast continued until privatisation of the railways on 1 April 1994 when the company was disbanded, being replaced by North London Railways which in turn was replaced on 2 March 1997 by Silverlink Trains, under their Metro branding.

The final change of operator occurred just over a decade later when, in November 2007, Transport for London assumed management of the service under the London Overground banner, although the station is managed by London Northwestern Railway.
