Station History

The original Euston station was planned by George and Robert Stephenson and designed by Philip Hardwick, before being built by William Cubitt and opened as their terminus by the London & Birmingham Railway on 20th July 1837.

The original terminus comprised two platforms with a wrought iron roof. The station facilities were expanded in 1846 after the London and Birmingham Railway was amalgamated with other companies to form the London and North Western Railway, including the construction of two additional platforms which opened that year and the Great Hall on 27 May 1849, replacing the existing trainsheds.

Further expansion was achieved in 1863 with the opening of a bay platform for services to Kensington (Addison Road), followed by another pair of mainline platforms opened in 1873.

The expansion continued following the growth of long-distance rail travel, with the station’s West side being extensively remodelled and extended in 1887, followed by another pair of platforms being added in 1891 and a further four, along with a booking office on Drummond Street, being opened on 1st July 1892.

Beginning in 1901, the lines from the station were doubled to Camden opening in 1906, before an extra pair of lines (which were to become the Watford DC Lines) were constructed as part of the ‘New Line’ project in 1912.

Grouping of the Railways following the Railways Act 1921 saw the LNWR absorbed into the new London Midland and Scottish Railway, commencing operation on 1st January 1923. The new entity quickly realised that Eustoin was becoming congested and set about finding a site for a new station. A site closer to Camden Town was identified and the LMS secured a Government loan guarantee to facilitate its construction in 1935.

Architect Percy Thomas was appointed to produce designs for the new station in 1937 with redevelopment works commencing on 12th July 1938. However, the project was shelved indefinitely due to the outbreak of World War II.

Nationalisation of the railways in 1948 saw the LMS become part of British Railways Midland Region. It was under BR that Euston was renovated in 1953 to repair some of the bomb damage inflicted during the war.

British Railways announced in 1959 that Euston would be completely rebuilt as part of the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. Permission for the rebuild was granted by the London County Council on the condition that the station’s Doric Arch be resited and restored to its original condition, however, British Railways considered the cost of the project made it unviable.

Demolition of the Arch and the Great Hall began on 6th November 1961 and was completed four months later. The new station was constructed to a design by the architects of the London Midland Region with construction commencing in the summer of 1962 and the newly constructed platforms opening on 3rd January 1966.

Further station development occurred in 1979 with the addition of three low-rise office blocks, a pedestrianised plaza and a bus station at the front of the station building.

Ownership of London Euston passed from British Rail to Railtrack in 1994 before passing to Network Rail in 2002 following Railtrack’s collapse.

The station, originally named Louden Road, opened in 1879 in response to local demand.

The construction of their ‘New Line’ by the LNWR in 1912 saw a further two platforms constructed at the station for the new services.

Following the passing into law of the Railways Act 1921, the London & North Western was amalgamated with other companies to become part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Under this new entity, the station was renamed South Hampstead in 1922.

This was followed by the passing of the Transport Act 1947 that saw the ‘Big Four’ railway companies of the time Nationalised to become British Railways. The line and its services were taken up by the Midland Region on 1st January 1948.

Electrification of the West Coast Main Line in the early 1960s saw the platforms on the ‘fast’ lines demolished to allow the tracks to be realigned, leaving the station layout as it is today. As part of the work, the original LNWR station building was also demolished and replaced with the current structure.

Management changes saw the station pass to the London & Southeastern business unit upon sectorisation in 1982, relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

Privatisation of the railways saw the station and line become part of National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary in 1993.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London began operation of the services under their London Overground brand.

Services through the station were bolstered when the London Underground Bakerloo Line extended here, arriving on 11th February 1915 before being extended to Willesden Junction on 18th May.

The London & North Western Railway built the first Willesden Junction station on 1st September 1866, replacing the London & Birmingham Railway station located half a mile to the Northwest on the West Coast Main Line.

Just three years later, the North London Railway constructed and opened their new lines through the area, passing over the WCML and a station was provided with two sets of separate platforms for Richmond and Shepherds Bush services.

This iteration of the high-level station lasted until 1894 when it was rebuilt to combine the existing services running through it. The new station consisted of two platforms for Richmond/Shepherds Bush services and an additional, shorter platform for trains to Earls Court. A new station building was constructed at this time and still survives today.

Following the decision of the London & North Western Railway to build a new line from London Euston to Watford, construction began in 1910 and two new outer platforms, along with two bay platforms were provided alongside the existing facilities on the West Coast Main Line. The new ‘low-level’ station opened along with the rest of the line on 15th June 1912.

Services through the low-level station increased with the arrival of London Underground Bakerloo Line services to Watford on 1st August 1917.

The Railways Act 1921 saw the grouping of railway companies and the London & North Western was amalgamated with several other companies to become the London Midland and Scottish Railway on 1st January 1923. This was followed by Nationalisation in 1948 when the LMS became part of British Railways Midland Region.

After World War II, Willesden Junction was left in a very dilapidated state. As a result of this, along with the withdrawal of Earls Court services, the high-level station was rebuilt in an island configuration, opening in 1956.

Station History

The London and North Western Railway‘s ‘New Line’ from London Euston to Watford Junction was opened in 1912, providing a faster route for passengers travelling between the two stations. However, due to the sparse local population of the area, no station was initially provided at South Kenton.

It wasn’t until the 3rd of July 1933 that a station was finally built, designed by the architect William Henry Hamlyn and opened by the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway.

The new station consisted of a single island platform accessed from both sides of the line by a footbridge. At the time, it was seen as more than adequate for the small local population. However, with the growth of nearby residential areas, the station soon became an important hub for commuters.

In 1948, the nationalisation of the railways saw the ownership of South Kenton Station transfer to British Railways (Midland Region). The station continued to serve the local community, but changes were made in 1964 to improve accessibility. The cumbersome and steep footbridge was removed, and a concrete underpass was built, making it easier for passengers to reach the platforms.

London Underground cut Bakerloo Line services back from Watford Junction to Stonebridge Park on 24th September 1982, however, the service was reinstated to terminate at Harrow & Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Following sectorisation of the railways in 1982, the line and station came under the London and Southeast Business Unit, later rebranded to Network Southeast in 1986.

A further and so far final change of management occurred upon privatisation in 1997 when National Express, under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary, assumed control. This lasted for just under ten years when, in November 2007, Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.

Although the ‘New Line’ ran alongside the existing main line, no platforms have ever been provided to serve these lines.

Services through the station were enhanced by the arrival of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line on 16th April 1917 after the line was extended from Stonebridge Park to Watford Junction.

Following the passing of the Railways Act 1921, Grouping of the railways saw the LNWR absorbed with other companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the new entity assuming control of all LNWR stations and services.

The Transport Act 1947 saw the ‘Big Four’ railway companies become Nationalised, with the LMS becoming part of British Railways (Midland Region) on 1st January 1948.

Nothing of any note occurred to the station in the following decades until, on 24th September 1982, London Underground withdrew the Bakerloo Line services between Stonebridge Park and Watford Junction, leaving the station to only be served by British Rail London Euston to Watford services. However, this situation only lasted for just under 2 years as the Bakerloo Line service was reinstated as far as Harrow & Wealdstone on 4th June 1984.

Sectorisation of the railways in 1982 saw the existing regions consigned to history and replaced by new ‘business units’ that would assume responsibility for the running of services and management of stations. The Watford services were placed under the London & Southeastern business unit, being relaunched as Network Southeast on 10 June 1986.

The next change of management was enacted in 1997 when, following the passing of the Railways Act 1993, the business units were sold off to private companies. The Watford DC Line services were assumed by National Express under their Silverlink Trains subsidiary.

The final change of management for the line and its stations came in November 2007 when Transport for London undertook operation of the services under their London Overground brand, while station management was assumed by London Underground.
