Chingford was constructed and opened by the Essex County Fire Brigade on 19th October 1957.

The new station was built to replace the former Chingford Fire Brigade Station located further along The Ridgeway, which was closed on the same day the new station opened, and was demolished shortly afterwards.

Operation of the station transferred from the Essex County Fire Brigade to the London Fire Brigade in 1965 following the formation of the Greater London Council.

Notes

The origins of Whitechapel Fire Station lie in the decision by the Metropolitan Board of Works to replace the existing stations on Church Lane and Wellclose Square in 1874.

The original station comprised a four-storey building with stables and a yard to the rear. This was extended in 1899 with the building of new appliance bays in the yard as the existing appliance bay doors were not suitable for the horse-drawn appliances stationed here.

The station was adapted for motor vehicle use in 1911 however, the London County Council decided that the split engine room arrangement was unsuitable, and a replacement was designed in 1928.

The original station buildings were demolished and the current station was built on the same site.

Stoke Newington was constructed on this site and opened in 1974.

The new station was necessary to replace the existing Metropolitan Fire Brigade station, built in 1882 on nearby Leswin Road, which had become unsuitable for the modern needs of the Brigade.

The MFB station was saved from demolition and survives today as a community space.

Leytonstone Fire Station was constructed on this site in 2015 to replace the 1911 Leyton & Leytonstone Volunteer Fire Brigade Station which was closed and demolished in 2014.

Although the site is currently operated by the London Fire Brigade, it has only been so since 1965 when the creation of the Greater London Council saw the station transferred from the Essex County Fire Brigade.

Notes

Leyton was constructed on this site in 1989 and opened for service in 1990. The station received an official opening on 15 November 1991.

The new structure replaced the ‘temporary’ station building on the site that had been constructed in 1913, following the demolition of the Leyton & Leytonstone Volunteer Fire Brigade building originally on the site dating from 1879.

Although the new station was built for the London Fire Brigade, the previous station on the site was operated by the Essex County Fire Brigade, and only passed to the LFB on the formation of the Greater London Council in 1965

THe station is also well known as the fictional London Fire Brigade Blackwall fire station in ITV’s London’s Burning from Season 13 onwards, replacing E34 Dockhead.

Bethnal Green began construction in 1967 and was opened in 1969. The new station was required to replace the 1899-built London County Council station located further along Roman Road.

The former station gained Grade II Listed Building status on 27 September 1973 and is still in use today, currently occupied by the London Buddhist Centre.

Millwall was opened in 2005 to replace the existing station located further along Westferry Road.

This station was originally opened by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1876 as ‘Isle of Dogs’ and was demolished in 1904, being rebuilt and opened in 1905.

The station was awarded Grade II Listed Building status on 11th March 1988 and was closed in 2005, before finding new use as a restaurant named The Old Fire Station.
