West Norwood began construction in August 2013, with the building completed in October 2014 and opening on 25th November of that year.

The station was built to replace the existing 1916-built station on Norwood Road that had become unfit for purpose. This station was granted Grade II Listed Building status and is currently the home of the South London Theatre.

The new station was constructed as part of the £51 million Private Finance Initiative that included rebuilding nine other life-expired fire stations.
