Garage History

The London Tramways Company built a depot in 1892 to accommodate their cable-operated trams, which ran from Kennington to Telford Avenue. Additionally, the site served as a storage space for the cable winding equipment used in their daily operations.

The London Tramways Company was acquired by London County Council Tramways in 1899. The operation continued until 1904 when the depot was shut down to convert it to the electric tram system. The conversion was successfully completed, and the depot reopened in 1906.

In 1933, after the London Passenger Transport Board took over LCC operations, the depot was expanded onto the neighbouring water board property. As a result, two buildings were built on either side of a significant water main already on the new site.

After World War II, rebuilding of the site saw the burial of the water main and the transformation of the current setup from two separate buildings into a single, spacious depot. This project was successfully finished in 1949.

In July 1950, Operation Tramaway was launched, marking the beginning of the decline of tram services. By 1951, the final trams were running from Brixton, with AEC Regent III motorbuses taking over.

Brixton was the last garage in London to operate AEC Routemasters, with Route 159 being the final route to convert to low-floor operation in December 2005.
