The garage was erected by the Metropolitan Electric Tramway company in order for them to augment their tram operations, opening on 17 July 1913.
Late 1913 saw the bus operations of the MET acquired by the London General Omnibus Company, with Tottenham Garage also passing ownership. The outbreak of World War I saw the garage requisitioned by AEC as part of the war effort in 1914, not returning to bus operations until June 1919.
Following the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933, the London General Omnibus Company was absorbed into London Transport.
As part of the ever changing needs of bus operation, Tottenham garage was extensively modernised between the end of 1985 and mid 1986, losing its distinctive triangular gable roof in the process.
The privatisation process of London Buses began in April 1989 and Tottenham was allocated to the Leaside Buses business unit, operating under this name until privatisation in January 1995 when the business unit was sold to Cowie Group, who rebranded as Arriva in April 1998.
Following several route gains by Arriva, the garage was extended to increase capacity in mid 1999 and celebrated its Centenary in 2013.
