The station was built to replace the former Metropolitan Fire Brigade station on the site dating from 1902, which had been demolished the previous year.

Local firefighting history is also present in the area as the 1868-built Metropolitan Fire Brigade station on The Pavement, which received Grade II Listed Building status on 20th December 2004, is still extant.
