Station History
Following the incorporation of the Eastern Counties Railway in 1862, the Great Eastern Railway began planning a more direct route between Bethnal Green and Enfield Town than was extant.
The line, under the name of the Stoke Newington & Edmonton Railway was opened in stages between 27 May and August 1872 with a new station opening at Silver Street on 22 July.
Following the grouping of the railways in 1923, the GER was absorbed as part of the new London & North Eastern Railway with all services and stations passing to the new company. This was followed In 1948 with the railways’ nationalisation, seeing the LNER become part of the Eastern Region of British Railways.
The station remained largely unchanged right up until the early 1980s when the original wooden entry staircases were replaced with concrete examples, while the canopy on the Northbound platform was removed and a brick shelter constructed.
A fire on the London-bound platform during the early 1990s saw much of the original platform canopy destroyed, with a modern replacement constructed that joined to the remains of the original.
Privatisation saw the line and its stations awarded to National Express who began operations on 1 April 2004 and operated until Abellio gained the franchise in October 2011. The final change of operator thus far in the station’s history came on 31 May 2015 when the Lea Valley Lines passed to London Overground ownership.
