Station History

Barking Riverside is a current development underway on the site of the former Barking Gasworks. As part of the planning permission for 10,000 new homes and the restrictions presented, adequate transport links were required for any number of homes over 1200.

Although an extension of the Docklands Light Railway was proposed for the area, this was dropped by the Mayor of London and instead, in 2014 an extension of the existing Gospel Oak to Barking London Overground Line to Barking Riverside Station was decided upon.

Following a 3 year consultation period, the scheme was approved and construction of both the station and line began in late 2018. The station, designed by architect Weston Williamson, was completed and opened in December 2021, although the line serving it was delayed due to both the COVID-19 pandemic and issues around utility diversion, finally opening on 18 July 2022.
