Station History

Barking Riverside is a current development underway on the site of the former Barking Gasworks. As part of the planning permission for 10,000 new homes and the restrictions presented, adequate transport links were required for any number of homes over 1200.

Although an extension of the Docklands Light Railway was proposed for the area, this was dropped by the Mayor of London and instead, in 2014 an extension of the existing Gospel Oak to Barking London Overground Line to Barking Riverside Station was decided upon.

Following a 3 year consultation period, the scheme was approved and construction of both the station and line began in late 2018. The station, designed by architect Weston Williamson, was completed and opened in December 2021, although the line serving it was delayed due to both the COVID-19 pandemic and issues around utility diversion, finally opening on 18 July 2022.

Station History

Barking station was opened by the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway on their new line to Tilbury on 13 April 1854. Following the construction of two further new lines by the LT&SR, the station was extensively rebuilt in 1889.

9 July 1894 saw the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway (a joint enterprise between the Midland Railway and the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway), open their line which connected to the existing LTSR line at Woodgrange Park. From opening, the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway services (operated by the Midland Railway) ran through to Barking and beyond.

Services operated by the District Railway arrived at Barking in 1902, however these were withdrawn in 1905 when electrification of the line was paused at East Ham. Barking did not regain its District Line service until the continuation of the electrification arrived in 1908. Further electrification saw the District Line service extended to Upminster in 1932, closely followed by the arrival of Metropolitan Line services in 1936.

Following the nationalisation of British Railways in 1948, the station came under the ownership of the Eastern Region. Architects H.H. Powell and John Ward were charged with designing a new booking hall for the station and construction began in 1959 with the station being reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1961.

The Station booking hall was granted Grade II listed status by English Heritage (now Historic England) on 24th November 1995.

Station History

Although track was first laid through the site by the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway in 1854 on their line from Forest Gate Junction to Grays via Barking, it was not until 9 July 1894 that a station was opened here by the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway on their line from Tottenham. A short spur line to East Ham was also opened at this time and was served sporadically, as an alternative terminus.

From opening, services through the station were operated by the Midland Railway and reached further than both termini of the line. During the summer season, several trains ran to popular tourist destinations and as such, the platforms at Woodgrange Park were constructed to a greater length to accommodate them.

Following declines in traffic, the spur to East Ham was closed in 1958, followed by the closure of the station goods yard on 7 December 1964. The section of line through the station was electrified as part of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway modernisation in 1962.

The mid-1970s saw the platform buildings and canopies demolished, while a new ticket office was constructed at the westbound platform entrance. During the 1980s the service levels fell and the maintenance standards dropped in parallel, leading to a prolonged period of destaffing and the dereliction of the station in general which led to the ticket office being demolished in the mid-1990s.

Following the takeover of the line by Transport for London and the formation of London Overground in 2007, minimal improvements have been made to the station. Staff are now available for the duration of the train service and a small information cabin has been provided.

The station remained in a pretty much ‘as opened’ state until the station’s wooden platform awnings were removed in 1970. Further changes were made in 1980, when the booking office was closed and replaced by a portable cabin. This cabin lasted until 1989 when it was destroyed in a fire, leading to the station becoming unstaffed.

When the station was built, its covered stairways were located towards the Barking end of the platforms, but this was changed in 1998 when new stairways were opened that led out onto Woodgrange Road.

Following the takeover of the line by Transport for London and the establishing of the London Overground, Wanstead Park has seen very little modernisation and refurbishment, remaining unstaffed and with none of the original station buildings surviving.

Leytonstone was unique in the fact that, due to the restricted space of the site its goods yard was at ground level, so wagons had to be moved from the goods line located behind the eastbound platform via a hydraulic hoist.

Following Nationalisation in 1948, ownership of the station passed to British Railways and it was renamed Leytonstone High Road on 1 May 1949. The original wooden platform buildings were destroyed by fire in the early 1950s and were replaced with long flat canopies built to the standards of the time.

Due to a drop in traffic, the station goods yard was closed on 6 May 1968, the same day as the yard at Leyton Midland Road.

In the early 1980s, service levels on the line were cut back to just 1 train an hour and ticket offices were closed with staff withdrawn.

Following the takeover of the line by Transport for London and the establishing of the London Overground, Leytonstone High Road has seen extensive modernisation and refurbishment, including the installation of ticket barriers.

During the First World War, on 17 August 1915, a German Zeppelin dropped three bombs on or near the station, resulting in the destruction of the ticket office and a billiard hall located in the railway arches under the line. Several nearby houses were also destroyed or damaged and four people lost their lives.

Following Nationalisation in 1948, ownership of the station passed to British Railways and it was renamed Leyton Midland Road on 1 May 1949. Due to a downturn in traffic, the station goods yard, located just to the east, was closed on 6 May 1968.

In late 1980, the Greater London Council took the decision to remove the existing ticket office and replace it with a new facility located on Midland Road itself. However, this was subsequently demolished a few years later when the station became unstaffed.

With the takeover of the Gospel Oak to Barking line in 2007, Leyton Midland Road has seen a large amount of investment, benefitting from a range of improvements in the subsequent years, although, as a consequence, the Midland Road entrance to the station was closed.

The arrival of the railway actually changed the surrounding area from what was a rather middle-class suburb to a more industrial setting.

In 1902, joint ownership of the line and its stations was granted to the Great Eastern Railway and the Midland Railway. Nationalisation in 1948 saw station ownership passed to British Railways.

London Underground’s Victoria Line arrived here on 1 September 1968 and was constructed with separate station buildings to the British Rail station. Indeed, it was not until 14 December 1981 that British Rail closed their station and resited the platforms further to the west, whilst also moving their ticket issuing facilities into the Underground booking hall to provide a more convenient interchange.

Station History

Although the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway constructed a line from Tottenham Hale (then Tottenham) to Highgate Road in 1868, a station was not provided here.

This situation was rectified and a new station was built in May 1871, named ‘South Tottenham and Stamford Hill’.

The first trains that served the station were operated by the Midland Railway, which had taken over the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway, in 1872.

On 9 July 1894, the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway opened a new line from South Tottenham and Stamford Hill to Woodgrange Park, where it connected to the existing London, Tilbury & Southend Railway line to Barking.

From opening, the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway services did not terminate at South Tottenham but continued to other destinations reached via the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway line.

In 1902, joint ownership of the line and its stations was granted to the Great Eastern Railway and the Midland Railway. Nationalisation in 1948 saw station ownership passed to British Railways, who renamed the station to South Tottenham in 1949.

In 1980 with the service reduced to one train an hour, staff were withdrawn from the station and the ticket office was closed.

However, the train service was doubled in 1981 and, following the takeover by London Overground in 2007, station staff were re-introduced and the station has been progressively modernised.

Within 3 years of opening the station was renamed to Harringay Park, Green Lanes. Further renaming to Harringay Park occurred on 18 June 1951 when the station underwent reconstruction.

The original wooden platform buildings were replaced with brick and concrete structures, while the platforms were lengthened in connection with a rise in traffic from the adjacent Harringay Stadium, which became the third renaming of the station on 27 October 1958.

The station goods yard, situated just to the west was closed on 3 February 1964 and the site is now occupied by the Railway Fields nature reserve.

The fourth renaming of the station occurred under Network Southeast ownership, when the station became Harringay East on 12 May 1990, following the closure of the Stadium 3 years earlier. The final change of name to Harringay Green Lanes came on 8 July 1991.

In late 2003, both platforms were shortened as a result of subsidence of the land beneath them. The original street level station building still survives and is in use as a cafe.
